Chicken Pox?

So I went for my second appointment today – the ultrasound. I guess I could’ve bothered to read some of the information I got from the doctor, or maybe even what the internet had to say about “3rd day testing,” but I didn’t bother until this morning.

They told me to call when I got my period and they’d have me come in to do an ultrasound to see how everything looked – uterus, ovaries, etc. When I called Tuesday, they said I could see Dr Murray on Wednesday morning. Dr Murray is the male doctor – which I kind of appreciate that they have. A lot of couples come in there and I think the idea of talking to some woman about your troubles getting pregnant might be hard for a man. Of course, I’m not that guy, so when they said he’d be doing the ultrasound, I kinda shrugged. A doctor is a doctor, but I did kind of feel like he wasn’t MY doctor. Just some guy doing a scan.

So I guess watching TV isn’t the best way to make assumptions about medical procedures. This was a transvaginal ultrasound – all up in there. Of course, I realized this in the parking lot as I was about to walk in while I was reading some helpful internet information. Ugh. I wasn’t looking forward to it.

When I walked in, I realized another friend I knew (friend of a friend) worked there when I saw her. So we waved and I said hey to my gym friend there too, talking to the receptionist. Like “hey are you going to the WOD today? Nah, me neither” was going to make me less nervous. Of course, friendly faces can’t hurt.

When I went in, the room was kinda dark which I appreciated. The nurse told me what to do to get ready and left. Then the knock came on the door and Dr Murray came in. We shook hands and talked.

He said my blood work showed I wasn’t immune to chicken pox and asked if I’d ever had it. I said yes, because I remember being little and getting it, but it wasn’t too bad. So apparently, chicken pox is a pretty big deal when you’re pregnant. Right now zika is all over the news, but Dr Murray said that chicken pox can be even worse. So I’ll be going through the vaccination process, which takes about two months.

I mentioned to him that my 35th birthday was creeping up, but he said 3 months give or take wouldn’t make much difference.

Panicked about chicken pox and old busted eggs, I laid back for the procedure. The ultrasound wand itself wasn’t bad – then the machine turned off. Oh geeze. So they had to turn it off manually and then back on again and here we go a second time. He said “your uterus looks good. Now I’m going to look at your ovaries. Okay…. right ovary…. hmm. follicles… 1,2,3,4,5,6,7… hmm… left ovary … 1,2,3,4,5…. hmmm. Okay.”

Then it was over. What was he counting? Eggs? Augh! There wasn’t any discussion after, just that I’d need to get more blood drawn. So I went in and my friend drew my blood and we talked about getting or not getting the chicken pox vaccine. Seems smarter to do it than be a panicked mess worrying about it.

Then when I was waiting to check out, Dr Scotchie showed up. We talked for a minute – I told her about the blog and she seemed excited. She also offered to help me narrow down my spreadsheet – which I appreciated because when I got my blood work back, it turns out that I’m CMV immune, which means I don’t have to rule out anyone from my current list. That is great news, but I was sort of hoping for an easy way to cut the list in half.

So then I scheduled my appointment for the HSG (to be done at an imaging center) where they’ll use a dye to check my fallopian tubes. After that, I’ll go back in to talk to Dr Scotchie about all the information they have put together.

When I left, I felt worried. What if I can’t get the vaccination? What if waiting isn’t a good idea? I called my office health clinic to see if they offered it – of course not. I texted my GP to see if she offered it – nope. She suggested I go to one of the drug stores with the minute clinics.

So that will be my next step – maybe I can find one this weekend or Monday. Overall, I’ll be glad to get all the information collected so Dr Scotchie and I can sit down and talk.
So July is probably too soon – but it looks like August is a real possibility.

EDIT: The power of the blog. I got a text message this morning from my GP (who I have known forever and is awesome) when she said she read my blog and realized they DO have what I need at her office – so I’ve made an appointment for tomorrow. Here we go!
